Coaster Grotto - Glossary

Definitions of the terms used in the theme park reviews.

Coaster Review Information

Best Part of the Ride - The most enjoyable and thrilling element or part of the ride. This can be anything from particular drops, turns, or inversions. A value of N/A would mean that the reviewer has either not ridden the ride, or has no preference for any particular part of the ride as it is all good or all bad.

Best Seat - The most thrilling and enjoyable row of seats on the ride. The general format is car# : row#. So for a train with 6 cars, with each car containing 2 rows of 2 seats, 1:1 would be the front seat of the train, and 6:2 would be the back seat of the train. A value of N/A would mean that the reviewer has either not ridden the ride, has no seating preference, or has only ridden in one seat. Generally, the reviewer will ride in the front and back seats and state which one they prefer.

On-ride Photo - Some rides include cameras that take photos of riders. A value of N/A would mean that the information is not available.

Popularity - How busy the ride is in relation to other rides at the park. An estimate of how busy the ride is on the day(s) the reviewer visited. Values are expressed as a percentage with 100% meaning the ride is popular and long lines should be expected on busy days. A value of N/A would mean that the ride was closed or the reviewer did not ride so cannot provide an estimate.

Satisfaction - The overall rating for the ride expressed as a percentage. A value of N/A would mean that the reviewer did not ride.

Times Ridden - The total number of laps taken on a ride by an individual. This figure represents how many times the reviewer has ridden the ride. Rides that complete the circuit several times are only counted once per ride.

Park Review Information

Admission - The price charged to gain entry into the park. Some parks operate a pay-one-price plan (also known as unlimited rides, or ride-all-day) which usually includes admission to the park and most rides. Alternatively, some parks operate a pay-per-ride plan, which allows riders to purchase tickets or coupons for individual rides, the park may also charge a nominal gate admission to enter the park. Some parks operate both schemes thus giving the guest a greater choice.

Attractions - The number of attractions in the park. This includes rides, shows, and exhibits as listed on the park website or park map.

Number of Rides - The number of attractions at a park that a person can ride. This excludes rides that are not included with a pay-one-price plan when one is available, e.g., Sky Coasters, Go-Karts, etc. It also excludes all attractions located in water parks, shows, exhibits, and games.

Review Scoreboard

Landscaping - The amount of vegetation such as trees and plants used around the ride. Rides that use the terrain of the park or are surrounded by trees will score highly. However, many parks place rides on concrete or similar surfaces and as a result a rating of 5/10 is generally given to reflect the average value.

Overall - The general overall score of the ride as a whole. Since the most important aspect of a ride is the actual standalone ride itself, this rating usually matches the Ride Experience rating. However, very high or low ratings on other factors such as theming and landscaping may result in a change of the Overall Rating.

Queuing Area - The area where people stand in line and wait to ride. Ratings are based on general appearance of the queue and have nothing to do with the actual wait times or the station. Queues that are themed, landscaped, and shaded score higher. Since most parks do not do much with the queuing area, a value of 5/10 is used as an average value.

Ride Experience - The thrill and enjoyment the standalone ride delivers. Based on the riding sensations experienced unaided by any other factor.

Station - The area where riders board the ride. Rides with themed, well maintained, and organized stations score higher. A value of 5/10 is used as an average value.

Theming - The amount of props, effects, music, lighting, and background story used to theme an attraction. Very few rides are totally themed throughout, and as a result a rating of 5/10 is generally given to reflect the average value.

Riding Sensations

Airtime - Sensation of raising up out of your seat as a result of Negative G's. Occurs on the crest of hills whilst riding in the front of a train, and during the descent of hills whilst riding in the back. Ejector air is abrupt and feels like you will be thrown from the train. Floating air is when you gently raise up out your seat. Standing air is very powerful and results in your whole upper body being lifted up so you are almost standing, this type of airtime can be dangerous and is very rare due to modern restraints.

Discomfort - Measure of how uncomfortable the ride is. Discomfort can be caused by many factors including: Uncomfortable seats and restraints such as those without padding or with overhead shoulder harnesses that lead to headbanging. Poor tracking resulting in shuffling and bouncing of the train on the track. Poor transitions where the train takes turns and inversions too fast or at the wrong angle. Sometimes the ride may also be uncomfortable as it is too intense for a particular individual.

Intensity - The combined effect of all of the rides forces and sensations. Generally the more G's experienced the more intense the ride will be. Some riders may find that discomfort also increases with intensity.

Lateral G's - Sensation of being forced to either side of the train. Laterals occurs on sharp bends, turns, and helices. Forces are significantly reduced by banking turns and adding seat dividers to trains.

Out of Control - Sensation of speed and feeling that the ride is going faster than intended. Usually results in increased Positive and Lateral G's. Significantly reduced by trim brakes and midcourse brake blocks.

Positive G's - Sensation of being forced into your seat. Usually occurs at the bottom of drops and during inversions.
