Thorpe Park's new ride for 2005, which opened Easter Monday, left 38 riders trapped over 50 feet in the air on Tuesday in bad weather after the ride shut down automatically due to a technical fault.
Everyone was bought down safely and given blankets and hot drinks, and were seen by medical staff, but there were no injuries. None of the riders were trapped upside down during the breakdown.
The Slammer, is an S&S; Power Sky Swatter and is the first of its kind in Europe and only the second one in the world, the other is located at Six Flags Astroworld in Texas. The ride features two giant paddles that rotate 360 degrees backwards and forwards around a centre axis. Riders are taken as high as 105 feet in the air and sent free falling back to the ground at speeds up to 30 mph.
The ride remained closed for the rest of the day and was still closed on Wednesday.
