Six Flags New England

Ride Facts and Info

Intamin hypercoaster, voted by Park World Magazine as “The No.1 coaster on the Planet.” Also rated the world’s best steel coaster in the 2003 Golden Ticket Awards.

The ride is themed after Superman, and has Daily Planet style building for entry into the queue. The ride is located at the back of the park and runs alongside the Connecticut River. Superman has 2 trains, each with 9 cars containing 2 rows of 2 seats. Restraints consist of a t-shaped lapbar and a seat belt.

Ride Layout

The train leaves the station and climbs the lifthill to a height of 208 feet. The first drop plummets 221 feet and an angle of 70 degrees, into a mist-filled underground tunnel. There then follows another hill, which is about 150 feet high. The train then climbs back up into an overbanked right-hand turnaround before dropping back down, where it heads back towards the previous hill, before turning to the left to run alongside the previous section of track.

Three more hills follow, with the climb into the third hill turning to the left, and twisting to the right on the way down. The drop leads into a banked right-hand turnaround, which rises back up into another hill; this hill then leads into a large left-hand helix. The train then rises back up into another hill, which features a drop and right-hand turnaround through a mist-filled underground tunnel. The train then emerges from the tunnel and travels over three bunny hills before taking a right-hand turn onto the brake run and back to the station.

Ride Evaluation

Superman – Ride of Steel is an awesome ride! It is the ultimate airtime machine in steel coasters, with lots of speed, height, hills, and laterals, all packaged together on one long smooth ride.

The first drop features several seconds of weightlessness on the way down, as well as some good ejector air the back. Riding in the front you are dangled over the top of the first drop for several seconds as the rest of the train crests the lifthill; at one point the track actually disappears out of view. The tunnels add that extra thrill factor, and the mist is nice and refreshing on hot days.

The second drop provides some fabulous ejector air all over the train, and the following overbanked turnaround gives a slight feeling that you are going to fall out. The following flat section of track really allows you to feel the speed of the ride, whereas the next two hills are packed full of powerful negative g’s. The remainder of the ride continues to deliver airtime, even on the final bunnies, and the turns and helix provide some great laterals.

Superman – Ride of Steel just completely blows me away each time I ride it, and judging by the looks on people’s faces when the train returns to the station, the general public love it as well. This is pure perfection, and one of only a few coasters to receive the full 10/10 from Coaster Grotto.
