Goliath, Six Flags Magic Mountain - Review

Goliath - Review

Six Flags Magic Mountain

Ride Facts and Info

Known as the giant among coasters, with a first drop of 255ft, Goliath had the world's largest drop when it opened in March 2000. The trains are large and spacious and have comfortable lapbars for restraints, there are no seatbelts. The queuing area is lavishly landscaped with palm trees and tropical plants, and the station has a wonderful Aztec type theme. The giant letters at the entrance of the ride with the first drop in the background make a wonderful start to this super ride.

Ride Layout

The train leaves the station and takes a right-hand turnaround, which leads to the lifthill. The lifthill is 235 feet tall, and the first drop is 255 feet long. The first drop plunges into a 125 foot mist-filled underground tunnel, before emerging out the other side and climbing up into a banked right-hand turnaround that travels over one of Colossus's turnarounds.

After that the ride features two more drops before turning into the midcourse brakes. After the midcourse brakes is another twisting drop, several turns, and a clockwise helix or centrifuge as it is often called.

Ride Evaluation

The first drop is great, although not as steep as on some Hypercoasters, it provides great views of the park, and is very smooth. The third hill features massive floating air for several seconds if you are sitting in the front of the train, unfortunately that is about the only major airtime on the entire ride.

The remainder of the ride is packed full of laterals and speed, with the helix being one of the most intense elements on a ride I have experienced to date. While Goliath is not the best hyper coaster I've ridden, its combination of elements make it a ride that stands above most other coasters, and it is so smooth.
