    Astroland - Review

Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 21-Nov-2004 | Based on 3 visits between 06/01-09/04

Astroland is a small traditional style amusement park located just off the Coney Island beach boardwalk; it is one of several small parks in the Coney Island area. Admission to Astroland is free, and you can purchase individual ride tickets or buy a pay-one-price wristband for $17.99 or $21.99 if you want unlimited rides on the Cyclone roller coaster.

You can get to the park easily via car or subway; it is about 30-45 minutes drive (depending on traffic) from JFK airport. I don't recollect the park having its own car park, but there are plenty of parking meters around the vicinity, although finding a vacant one is not always easy.

The park offers an assortment of rides, including a log flume, a ghost train (Dante's Inferno) and several flat rides, but the big draw for the park is the infamous Cyclone wooden roller coaster, and the numerous kiddies rides that the park has. There are also several other things to do in the Coney Island area, including what looks like a nice beach.

The aesthetics of the park leave a lot to be desired as it is basically a concrete block with no theming or landscaping, and thus it is not very attractive to look at, but at night the lights from the rides help disguise this and create a more appealing atmosphere. During the day the park gets quite busy with families, and during the evening the crowd seems to change more towards teens, but I've never witnessed any long lines or any trouble. There are several fast food places to eat around the area, and the prices seem reasonable, but be prepared to have to pay for the restrooms in the park.

Overall, Astroland is worth a visit (and the hassle of getting there) just to ride the Cyclone, but unless you have small kids there really isn't that much else there to warrant a visit or spending more than an hour there.
