    Parc Asterix - Review

Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 02-Jul-2004 | Based on 2 visits between 09/02-07/04

Parc Astérix is based on the Viking character Astérix, and includes several impressively themed areas. The park is nicely landscaped, and includes a lake and plenty of trees surrounding the park. However, the park layout is quite confusing, with some rides being difficult to find, and several dead-end paths.

The park has a good mixture of rides, including several roller coasters, some nicely themed water rides and flat rides. There are also several shows, including a very popular Dolphin show. However, with the exception of Tonnerre de Zeus, none of the rides really stand out as exemplary, but the I feel the overall park package does make up for that.

The park is not far from Paris, and is about 20 minutes drive from Charles De Gaulle airport. You can catch the CIF (a bus) from the bus station near Terminal 3, which costs about €5.90 return. They run every 30 minutes from about 9am to 1 hour after park closing. If you are traveling from the UK, it is possible to fly to Paris, do the park, and return home the same day. Several staff members speak some English, although not everyone.

I have visited the park twice. The first time I visited the park on a warm sunny Wednesday near the end of season and expected the park to be empty. What I didn't realise is that schools are out on Wednesdays, and the park was quite busy. Fortunately, the waits were not too long, with the exception of Zeus which was only running one train; I was quite annoyed by this particualrly as the park was busy and they were running three trains on Trace Du Hourra.

The second time I visited the park was on a Thursday at the beginning of July and the park was extremely crowded. All of the lines for popular rides were full with some extending onto the midway. The park did a good job with dispatch, but it was a little too busy for me to enjoy fully, and I was disappointed to only have a total of 9 rides in a full 8 hours in the park.

As mentioned before, the theming is very nice and also different, with several themes that I had not seen before, for example, the Greek village theme made a nice change to the standard cowboy and western theming found at nearly every park (well, those parks that bother with theming.) The park was also very clean, but as with most parks in mainland Europe, there were no water fountains, and people were smoking all over the place, including in line!

Overall, I found Parc Astérix to be a very nice park, with some great theming, nice landscaping, and a good park atmosphere. There is a wide variety of rides and attractions that would appeal to everyone, but with the exception of Tonnerre de Zeus, there isn't really much else there that exciting. Of course, Tonnerre de Zeus is one very big exception!!!

    Ideas for Improvements
  • The park needs some modern flat rides, and a good steel coaster.
    Parc Asterix Tips
  • Arrive at the park on opening and head to Tonnerre de Zeus to try and beat the crowds. Also a good time to ride is when the Dolphin Show is on.
  • A Tussaud's Annual Pass gives you free entry to the park. Go to the Customer Services on arrival to get a complimentary ticket.
