    Pleasure Island - Review

Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 08-Jan-2002 | Based on 1 visit in 08/02

Pleasure Island is located close to the Lincolnshire coastline about five miles from Cleethorpes town center. The park has a reasonable selection of flat rides, both old and new, including the mind blowing Alakazam, a HUSS Fly Away, which is like a flying enterprise and is not for the faint hearted. They also have a parachute drop and an enjoyable 90-foot S&S; double shot tower called Hyper Blaster. The park also has several shows, but its selection of water rides and roller coasters is quite poor.

Pleasure Island is themed into six areas: Africa, Morocco, Spain, Old England, White Knuckle Valley, and Kiddies' Kingdom. Old England is the first area you experience as you enter the park, and the theming here is quite promising (although it does look a little cheap). Next is Morocco, which again is cheap looking, but it's better than no theming at all, which kind of sums up the rest of the park. Landscaping is okay, but the park is not going to win any awards for beauty. There is a lake in the middle of the park, and several trees scattered around here and there, but some of the rides could do with a coat of paint, for example, Crazy Loop.

The park is open daily from around Easter to the beginning of September, and open weekends during September and October. The park opens at 10am until 5-6pm depending on the time of year, with rides opening at 10.30am. The entry price gives free unlimited access to most of the attractions in the park.

Overall, I was quite surprised by the park, but I was kind of expecting the worst! It is a clean and friendly family park, with one or two good thrill rides. What I found extremely funny was the autospeil on some of the rides, for instance "Prepare for the most terrifying experience of your life - Boomerang!" Unfortunately, the coaster selection is very poor, and even I was forced to ride flat rides to get my moneys worth. Since I'm not a big fan of flat rides, Alakazam, Condor, and Gravitron one after the other made me feel ill for the rest of the day.

The park has a good base on which to build, and with the addition of a world class coaster and a few more rides, the park would be worth visiting again. However, with its current selection of rides, I found two or three hours in the park to be ample.

    Ideas for Improvements
  • The park needs a new signature ride like a world class coaster.
  • More theming, particularly in areas like White Knuckle Valley.
