    Wicksteed Park - Review

Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 03-Oct-2003 | Based on 1 visit in 10/03

Wicksteed Park was founded by Charles Wicksteed who originally started a company that manufactured playground equipment for parks. He wanted a safe place for children to play, so he installed some of his products into Wicksteed Park. A 30-acre lake was dug out and marked the beginning of the park in 1921. Since then several rides and attractions have been added, and what was once merely a picnic park and playground, grew into the UK's oldest theme park that receives over one and a quarter million visitors each year.

The park is divided into five main areas: Playground, Wicksteed Pavilion, Arena, Lakeside, and Wicksteed Showground. The Playground features a few rides, but is mainly a playground consisting of various slides and swings, which are free of charge. The Wicksteed Pavilion is an old Edwardian building featuring bars and bistros that are available for function hire. The Arena is a small area surrounded by a Go-Kart track, which contains a few rides including the parks two roller coasters. The Lakeside is another small area featuring several water based rides like the park's famous Waterchute ride. Finally the Showground is a large grass area where various shows and events take place during the season.

Several of the areas are short walking distances apart, but there is a "land train" that transports riders from one area to the next. However, on nice summers day it is a pleasant stroll across the parkland between various areas. The park is clean, but the lakes and ponds are overridden with algae, and the toilets are pretty run down and smelly. The park has various fast food outlets offering junk food at reasonable prices. The staff were quite friendly and polite.

Admission to the park is free, and wristband or tickets can be purchased for the rides. The rides are reasonably priced and are usually one or two tickets per ride (£1 a ticket). The wristbands are actually cheaper for adults, which I think is a smart move because it is generally a family park. There is a car park charge ranging from £2 to £5 depending on the time of season, this may seem a little steep, but the park does state that this is to maintain free admission into the park.

As far as rides go there is nothing thrilling at the park, but there are some unique rides like the Waterchute and the Nautic Jets, and there is plenty to do for kids. I think Wicksteed Park represents a good value day out for the family, but I wouldn't consider it a destination park.

    Ideas for Improvements
  • Add a few more rides. A Wild Mouse, Double Shot, or Wave Swinger would make great family additions to the park.
    Wicksteed Park Tips
  • If you just want to ride the coasters then I would suggest purchasing tickets.
  • Although the park does ask visitors to refrain from parking in local streets, if you are only visiting the park to ride the coasters then a £5 parking charge is a little steep.
  • Wristbands are available. Adults £10.00. Children £13.50.
