    Disney's Hollywood Studios - Review

Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 30-Dec-2004 | Based on 3 visits between 05/89-03/04

Disney MGM-Studios is a theme park that attempts to bring the movies to life right before your eyes! Upon entering the park, you will find yourself on Hollywood Boulevard, a movie set themed street packed full of shops and restaurants, as well as a replica of Hollywood's famous Mans Chinese Theatre. Throughout the rest of the park, the same movie set theme predominates, and various attractions and shows thrill and educate guests with just about every aspect of movies and showbiz you can think of.

The park opened in May 1989, and since then several more attractions have been added, including Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. Shows and attractions also change to reflect the latest Disney movies, but old favorites like Indiana Jones still remain. The park also includes one of the most impressive backlot tram tours in any studios park, with the highlight being Catastrophe Canyon.

My first visit to MGM-Studios was as a young teen before the addition of Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and the Tower of Terror, and since I was only really interested in thrill rides, I found myself very bored. There were one or two things of interest, but certainly not enough to fill even half a day. Returning to the park as an adult I still feel the same way. I'm not a great fan of the movies, particularly those featured in the park, so the shows and attractions are of little interest to me. The shows and attractions are of a very good standard though, so if you like that kind of thing, you'll more than likely enjoy the park.

As a fan of thrill rides, Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and the Tower of Terror certainly deliver the thrills, and they do so in an excellent package. The theming on Tower of Terror is spectacular, and the whole ride is fun and exciting. Prior to the installation of seatbelts, the ride had staggering amounts of airtime that could compete with many roller coasters, sadly now the airtime has all but gone, but the I still feel it's the best drop ride to date, and these two rides alone make a first-time visit to the park a must.

As with all Disney parks, MGM-Studios is spotlessly clean, full of friendly and helpful staff, and very well themed, but the admission and food are expensive and overpriced. On my last visit to Disney World, MGM-Studios seemed to be the most crowded park of all, and the lines for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster and the Tower of Terror were both in excess of an hour. If the park is busy I would suggest making sure you use the Fastpass to ride these attractions, otherwise you could be stuck in a slow moving line for hours.
