Holiday World - Review
Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 12-Nov-2004 | Based on 3 visits between 05/02-08/04

Holiday World opened as Santa Claus Land in 1946, when it became the nation's first theme park. The park is a family run business and originally contained only a few children's rides and attractions. In 1984, two new additional themed sections were added to the park, and the park was renamed to Holiday World. In 1993, the Splashin' Safari Water Park was added.

Holiday World is now a 100-acre park containing several rides and attractions, with three different holiday themes: Christmas, Halloween, and Independence Day, there are also a couple of small kiddie areas. I really like the idea of the holiday themes, and most of the rides fit in well with the themes. The park is also nicely landscaped.

The park has been awarded the Friendliest and the Cleanest Park in the Golden Ticket Awards for several years, as well as claiming the titles for the 1st and 4th best wooden coasters in the world. I can certainly vouch for this, as Raven and Legend are two of my favorites woodies. Furthermore, I would say Holiday World has to rank as one of the cleanest parks I have ever visited; there was no litter, graffiti, or gum anywhere.

Upon arrival I was pleased to find free car parking, and very friendly staff at the ticket office. Food prices are very reasonable, and the food is also quite nice, and to add to it, soft drinks are free! The park has a great family atmosphere, and the staff are the best I've seen at any park; they are friendly, efficient, and at times amusing!

The park doesn't have a large selection of rides or coasters, but it does have something for everyone, although it could do with a good steel coaster, and a few other rides. However, it does have the best combination of wooden coasters in any park, and coupled with very reasonable admission charges, the park is an unmissable experience for anyone.

Holiday World also includes the Splashin' Safari water park, which has been voted as the 2nd best water park in the world several times in the Golden Ticket Awards. Not only is entry included with admission to Holiday World, but sunscreen and tubes are also free. The Water Park has a great layout, as well as some good water slides suitable for all members of the family. One of my favorites is ZOOMBabwe, which is the world's largest enclosed water slide, and it is lots of fun.

Out of the 13 parks I visited in a 14 day trip, I enjoyed myself at Holiday World more than anywhere else. Holiday World is a wonderful park, but with two or three more world-class rides, it could easily become my favorite park. Go there now!

Ideas for Improvements
  • Add a good steel coaster and an interactive dark ride.
    Holiday World Tips
  • Both the Raven and Legend seem to run better later in the day, so if you can visit the park when it is open late, you will be sure to get the best rides.
  • If you are at the front of the gates on opening, then you might want to get one or two rides on Raven or Legend before everyone else arrives. Either that or hit the coasters in the afternoon when a lot of people will be in Splashin' Safari.
