Six Flags AstroWorld - Review
Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 15-Nov-2001 | Based on 1 visit in 09/01

Astroworld is currently home to 9 coasters, including the only stand-up coaster in Texas, and the highest freefall tower in the state. It also contains a collection of some very unique rides like Ultra Twister and the former Texas Tornado, as well as the superb Texas Cyclone. However, the park is poorly maintained and several of the coasters have flaking paint work and rust on the track. Flowerbeds have overgrown or died completely, and several ponds have dried up or become over ridden with green gunge. To add to this, the park has only seen one brand new coaster added in the last 10 years, and most of the other ones are rejects from other parks.

Visiting the park on a late Saturday afternoon, I was distressed to find one train operation on all of their coasters (excluding Ultra Twister), and very slow and often incompetent staff operating them. The park was quite busy and to make matters worse there was a Fastlane system in operation that made the waits twice as long.

I cannot understand why more (or even some) money isn't spent on this park. Houston is the 4th biggest city in the US, and I'm sure the park makes enough money to pay for new rides and improvements. I visited Fiesta Texas earlier in the day, and Astroworld was much busier! Some areas of the park are reasonably themed and landscaped, and with proper care and attention and a few new rides it could be a park well worth visiting. However, in its current state, I will not be going back any time soon.

Ideas for Improvements
  • The park needs maintenance! Several of the rides need painting, as do some of the buildings.
  • In the last 10 years the park has only received one brand new coaster! I think it's about time they got something new, and not a clone.
    Six Flags AstroWorld Tips
  • Take some insect repellent - the Mosquitoes are unbearable at night.
  • The longest lines when I visited were for the Texas Cyclone and Serial Thriller. I would suggest riding Texas Cyclone first and perhaps getting in several rides before the park gets busy.
