Waldameer Park - Review
Review by: Webmaster | Last update: 01-Jun-2008 | Based on 2 visits between 06/03-06/08

Waldameer Park was originally a small picnic park named Hoffman’s Grove. It was not until 1896 when the park was leased by the Electric Motor Company that the park was given the name Waldameer, which is German for “woods by the sea.” The park is located close to shores of Lake Erie, and over the years it has steadily grown into a traditional family oriented amusement park.

There is no admission charge into the park, and guests can either buy individual tickets for rides, or purchase a ride all day wristband. Adjacent to Waldameer Park is Water World, which has an admission charge via a separate wristband or a combo wristband which gives entry into Water World and unlimited rides in Waldameer. The park is usually open weekends in May, and daily during the summer holidays (excluding Monday.)

On each of my visits to the park, I have found it to be very clean and tidy, and nicely landscaped with plenty of large trees throughout the park and in the adjacent free picnic groves. The beauty of the park is easily noticeably whilst strolling around the midway or on the Train or Sky Ride.

Since Waldameer is a traditional amusement park, it is not themed into separate lands so theming is pretty non-existent, but there are a couple of nicely themed dark rides, most notably the Whacky Shack, which is like a Ghost Train, but not really scary just full of strange things, and should not be missed.

The rides in the park are varied with a selection of classic flat rides, kiddies rides, a drop tower (X Scream), a nicely themed log flume (Thunder River), a classic family wooden roller coaster (Comet) through to an exciting terrain wooden roller coaster (Ravine Flyer II). This is not a large park, but there is enough here for everyone and at least enough to occupy half a day, or a full day if you intend to lounge around the Water Park. The park can get busy with school trips and parties, but usually wait times are minimal.

Food is a little limited to the usual theme park fast food but reasonably priced nonetheless. Each time I visited the park I have been very impressed with the friendliness of at least one or two staff members, who seemed to be enjoying their jobs and doing them efficiently. The park offers free entertainment in the form of Karaoke, which I found quite entertaining for a few minutes, plus some live shows including the Wally and Wendy show which features the park’s mascot Wally Bear.

Prior to the addition of the Ravine Flyer II, I would have said Waldameer Park would be merely just a local’s park, worth a visit to if you are passing by. However, now I would say it is definitely a destination park for anyone who likes wooden roller coasters, but be sure to take in some of the charm of the park as well because Waldameer has plenty of it.
